Medical School: Week 3

Monday:
Zoey woke up from a nap with Flock of Seagulls hair
We had some super fun lectures on confounding factors in study designs and how we get towards assuming causation. Basically, if you read any article that claims some some sort of finding was proven from research you should only assume that their claim might be right. Never assume any findings are correct. We then spent 1-5 working on patient interviews with standardized patients.

Tuesday:
We finished our last two purely biostatistic lectures. Some fun talk about linear, poisson, and logistic regression. We then got in our small groups and did some technology and resources stuff. We basically practiced finding resources on various case studies so that when we are inevitably confronted with a case we don't understand we can quickly find more information. I then had a PubMed quiz in which I had to demonstrate that I was able to use PubMed efficiently to find information on stuff.

Wednesday:
We learned about modifying effects in our first lecture this morning and then we learned about measures of excess risk. The point is to understand synergistic or antagonist effects in data. We then went to a lovely PBL session wherein we spent some time looking for research to back up a decision about a which drugs are good for preventing recurrent ischemic strokes. Then there was some more practice taking patient family history.

Thursday:
We talked about healthcare systems today in lecture and finished up that last technology and resources group session. During lunch my group that I'm presenting information about a research article on Friday met and we worked on the presentation. After lunch I met with the director of the medical science training program to talk about my application.

Friday:
Fridays lectures were mostly a review of the mastering medical information course material. My group also presented in our PBL session on research concerning the use of anti-platelet medication used in conjunction with aspirin following transient ischemic attacks. The last half of the day was filled with a lecture and patient interview about palliative care.

Overall the week wasn't super busy but did have some ups and downs. Fortunately, Addie was there to give everyone hugs
