Medical School: Week -1

It was registration week and oh what a week it was! We started off the week by doing some exciting orientation. While we did do some fun activities involving paper work and training for N95 masks the majority of activities culminated in me meeting a bunch of new people, learning their names, and immediately forgetting their names because so much was going on. But that only covers Monday.

Tuesday involved lots of set up for passwords and iPads (One of the mandatory tools for us to have is an iPad. Unfortunately, we aren't using them to play games.) Besides that most of the day was just listening to people go over resources available to medical students.  We did do an interesting mindfulness activity directed by the counseling center. We each got a box of raisins and spent five minutes using all five senses to "experience" the raisins. When we were invited to comment about our individual experiences throughout this activity I decided to restrain myself and not mention how the crunch of an over dried raisin immediately followed by a squish is like biting into a little spider body.

On Wednesday we started the day off by going over infection prevention. It was basically an hour and a half on why we should wash our hands and the terrible crises that occur when we don't. Although portions of the presentation were a little dry I did find raisins in my backpack from the day before. Breakfast raisins/spider bodies! Later that day we divided up our class into a bunch of smaller groups and played games with kids from the YMCA. There was a thunderstorm the night before that woke up everyone in the apartment so I was pretty exhausted and not looking forward to kids jumping on me. Fortunately, two people in my group use to be camp counselors and I was just support. I did help a little kid named Denzel eat an ice cream and cleaned him up three times after he ate it like a dog. I also had to help remove his shirt so he could eat his ice cream.

Thursday we had a problem based learning (PBL) session for the first time. To give us an idea of how it generally works without worrying about applying new material we were trying to diagnose an overflowing sink. I spent some time explaining how a septic tank works and how that might come into play as the scenario we were reading revealed more plumbing issues. (I'm pretty sure I learned all of it from watching an infomercial on TV.)

Friday was the white coat ceremony and we received our white coats along with a lot of advice. A lot of people had their families come so I sat in the corner of the room with a couple of other people whose family members lived thousands of miles away too. I also was able to avoid an acapella group's performance in the main room by sitting in one of the conference rooms off to the side. I think I've hear enough acapella at BYU for a life time.

Not bad for the first not week of medical school.
